appearance ¬ Professor Tarei has long, flowing black hair and deep, dark blue eyes. She can usually be seen wearing her favorite blue dress, a long garment that reaches below her knees and is a deep rich cerulean shade, with blue pumps. She normally dons a wide brimmed sun hat that matches her attire when working outdoors, something she tends to do quite often. Tarei has marvelously smooth skin and a radiant complexion that does not quite seem to fit with her work outdoors. She is about average height, though perhaps just slightly on the tall side.
As the need arises, she has an alternate attire for times when she is working with the police or in dangerous battle-heavy situations. This outfit is a much shorter dress that allows a bit more freedom of movement, sporting a large belt for her pokeballs. She wears comfortable tennis shoes rather than her usual pumps, and no hat. Having little restriction or distractions from her attire, she can focus on the fight or job at hand. On very rare occasions she may also be seen wearing a standard white lab coat, but this is normally only when working on official business in public. | personality ¬ Tarei is a very kind soul who genuinely enjoys helping others. She likes to keep busy, and is meticulous about the care and tending of her various gardens- however, not so much about keeping her lab clean and organized. She forgets to clean up her books and papers, so they can start piling up all around the lab. However, the pokeballs and starter packs are treated with the utmost care, nearly as neat and tended as her gardens.
Though she has an excellent memory when it comes to people and the world around her, she is oftentimes absentminded about the smaller things that affect her- such as eating and sleeping. If she becomes caught up in her work, she can stay up through the night and not eat a thing unless one of her Pokemon brings her something. Sometimes she can be caught sleeping at her desk in the middle of the day because she had been up the entire night at her work.
Professor Tarei has suffered her share of losses in her life, but she is a strong spirit. She has overcome her grief and setbacks and has chosen a life devoted to helping those in need. She will drop anything if someone so much as asks, and will always go out of her way to make others more comfortable. She takes things in stride, and no matter how dark things become she holds hope for the future. Though she may seem like a bit of a pushover, when her friends or allies are in trouble she will take a stand; she can fight with every fiber of her being against evil and wrong, almost seeming like a different person in her steadfast determination for right. |
history ¬ The Professor grew up with a love and appreciation for Pokemon that helped to fuel her thirst for knowledge and discovery. She had never known her father, as he had left her mother before she was even born. That did not bother her too much because she figured that if he was the kind of man who would abandon his family, then she and her mother were better off without him in their lives. Tragedy struck though when doctors discovered that her mother had cancer, and there was nothing that could be done about it. She remained at home longer than most children who were setting off to become Pokemon Trainers, and took care of her mother.
It was a difficult time for Sandra, watching her mother grow more sick by the day and only being able to make her as comfortable and happy as possible. She lived her life on time, knowing that she only had so much of it. Her mother died when she was sixteen, and it was left to Cassandra to organize the funeral and pay the debts. She could not remain in her hometown, in that house, with all those memories and all the sorrow trapping her. This was when she decided that she wanted to leave, to begin a life of her own.
She traveled for a while on the path of a trainer, but soon realized that her heart was not quite in it. She was more interested in leaning about Pokemon and the world than just traveling through it and battling. She heard of a female Professor on a string of islands who was taking apprentices- so Sandra set her course for the Orange Archipelago near Kanto to request the tutelage of Professor Ivy. She was still quite young at the time, only seventeen, but Ivy accepted her and she began to work and study on the island.
During her apprenticeship, Cassandra Aspen met a young man who lived on the island by the name of Jackson Tarei. At first they were simply friends, walking and talking together during their free time. Sandra started to find herself distracted during her studies, looking forward to the time when she would be free to meet up with him again. Jack worked with his grandparents in an orchard on the island and studied Pokemon medicine, and he too would anxiously await their meetings.
While they were both still students, they discovered that what had begun as simple friendship had evolved into a deep and rich devotion for one another- they were in love. Cassandra was barely nineteen, and Jack was twenty, when they were married. They both continued to work and study in their chosen fields, but they moved in together and lived happily on the island. Sandra still recalls these as the best years of her life- and the tragic progression ironically helped to develop her kind and unselfish heart.
She was twenty-one when she finally earned her credentials as a professor- and she was still twenty-one when her world fell apart. Jack fell ill with a mysterious disease, one that no one knew much about. It stole his strength, his vigor- he became weak, barely able to stand on his own. Cassandra stayed by his side constantly, despite his urgings that she should be working and living her life. He never once took pity on himself or turned bitter at the cards fate had dealt him; if anything, he was simply happy to be blessed with his wife. He did feel guilty and ashamed that he was causing Sandra so much pain and keeping her from her life, and he would just laugh whenever she got angry and told him to shut up- that it was not his fault.
Only a year passed before Jack's illness overcame him and he died. His words to her as his time neared its end are something that always echo in Cassandra's mind and heart. She kept his surname, how could she not? Though it was difficult at first, she managed to rise above the despair, and not close her heart off to love. That was when she decided that she wanted to help others, in any way that she could. When she decided that she would do whatever it took, sacrifice anything, to help those in need. When she vowed to honor her husband's memory by displaying the same courage and selflessness that he always did- in a way, she became a stronger and better person, reborn from the ashes of her grief.
After this, Tarei set off on a ship and was led to discover Laokia. These events can be found more detailed in the Plot, but suffice to say she reported her discovery and became the Professor of the region. She was among the youngest to attain such a lofty title, and she takes that responsibility seriously. She works through the region, trying to help the residents and has taken it upon herself to do everything within her power to keep them safe and happy. Thus, we reach the point she is at today. |
