Black sneakers pounded the pavement, followed by the patter of three sets of paws. The trainer strode along beside the piers, head held up high to better catch the gentle sea breeze that was blowing in from the port. Her Pokemon, shorter than she was, were all sheltered from any actual contact with the wind, but the smell reached them all the same. The two Growlithe were sniffing the air happily, unfamiliar with the smell of the ocean, but the Angel Demup that accompanied them was in stark contrast, his nose scrunched up against the smell and a frown on his face.
<Ugh, it smells like rotten fish>
He stated grumpily, holding his nose for added effect. Behind him, Mirra and Qwesta giggled quietly at his exaggerated antics.
"Well, someone's certainly in a good mood today, aren't they now?" Kazza teased, smiling jokingly at the Pokemon. A further chorus of giggling was raised in response from the two hounds, who darted off in front of their trainer, attention caught by some shiny object or another.
Rolling her eyes at their short attention spans, the trainer and Demup took off after the runaway Growlithe. "Oi, wait up guys! Don't get too far in front."

The soothing sound of waves could be heard from the ocean, disturbed only by the ruckus calls from a flock of Wingulls that were flying overhead. It was certainly a beautiful day to begin one's journey, or just simply relax just below the surface of the water.
A basculin was doing the latter, simply lingering close to the water's surface, soaking in the warm rays of sun. This particular fish pokemon had a number of scars along his body, so it was fairly obvious he had seen his fair share of fights. Right now though, he had no opponent to wrestle, so he merely enjoyed this peaceful moment.
A shadow drifting past alerted him when Kazza walked by, and he poked his head above the surface just in time to hear the human's demup complaining about the pier smelling like dead fish. "Rotten fish ye' say?" The Basculin grunted at the demup as he swam forward to keep up with the moving group. "Tis better a scent then what comes off yer flea bitten pelt, land lubber!" The basculin snorted. |

As the group strolled along beside the ocean, gentle waves lapping at the docks walls, brown eyes stole a glance at the water. The trainer wondered what was lurking beneath that seemingly calm surface, and tried not to shiver at the thought of fearsome leviathans and terrifying predators. Her attention didn't remain fixed on the possible creatures waiting and watching from beneath the waves for long, though, as her team, energetic and dynamic as they were, demanded her full attention.
"Slow down you two!"
Head down and arms pumping as she sprinted after the young hounds, she almost slipped and fell in surprise as a Basculine, stocky body covered in scars, pushed its head above the water and began talking to them.
"My apologies, please don't take it to heart - Cain's just a grumpy old thing."
Still running along, the Demup harumphed in annoyance, and muttered angrily about having been called "flea-ridden" and "old".
<My pelt is immaculate, I'll have you know, and I'm younger than you are... Calling me old... The nerve of her.>
Up ahead, the two Growlithe finally stopped, Kazza skidding to a halt just in time to avoid a collision. Cain, distracted as he was, was not so quick to react, and plowed into them. The three ended up in a tangled pile on the ground, two-thirds of which was laughing hysterically and the other third of which was complaining quite verbally and loudly.
"Serves you right for being rude, Cain."
From somewhere in the ball of different coloured fur, the Angel Demup growled.

Don't be apologizen' for nothing, miss." The Basculin grunted. He didn't really take apologies unless they were from the offending party anyway. Seemed pretty meaningless otherwise didn't it? It was the wee little Demup that was the rude one, and it didn't seem like he was the least bit sorry.
The basculin wasn't all that sorry either when the demup ended up falling over when his companions suddenly stopped in front of him. He too broke out in a fit of laughter. "Immaculate as a dust covered doormat yeh be now! Har har har!" The basculin laughed at the frustrated demup.
Now that the pokemon seemed reasonably riled up, the Basculin saw the perfect opportunity to engage in his favorite pass time. "See here yeh wee barnacle. If yer steaming, how about we fix tha' with a battle eh?" The Basculin suddenly challenged. He was definitely confident, and not just because he held the type advantage either. "I'll even be a sport and give yeh firs' shot. Yer not afraid o' a little water are yeh? Heheheheh." He offered, as he jumped up out of the water and flailing a bit in the air before landing smoothly in the water again. |

As it was, it seemed rather unlikely that Cain would be apologising anytime soon, to put it mildly. The gumpy Demup saw nothing wrong with what he had said - it wasn't as though the comment had been aimed at the Basculin anyway, so why was he offended? In contrast, his trainer blushed slightly in embarrassment. Sometimes she couldn't stand the Demup and his complaining ways. Still, he was in her team, and he was a useful Pokemon to have around and she didn't dislike him, persay. She just wished he could be a bit more positive every now and again, that was all. Listening to the water type joining in on the laughter, the brunette hid a smirk and a giggle of her own. If Cain saw that he'd never cease to complain about how mean she was to him. But he seemed distracted enough as it was at present, with two Growlithe collapsed on top of him and a Basculin, whom he had never seen before in his life, taunting him. Fur bristling, the Demup finally clambered out of the pile he had fallen into, and glared at the fish. Water type or not, he was going to show this fish not to mess with him. <Water? It won't make a difference, water or not, I'll fight you.>Was that apprehension in the fire types eyes? Kazza didn't have time to decide whether or not it was before Cain leaped into action, aiming to scratch his opponent with his sharp claws, his blood pumping as rage, adrenaline and rivalry kicked in all at once. 20/20+1 Attack ~~ nickname -- ( CAIN ) species -- ( ANGEL DEMUP♂ ) friendship -- ( 0/100 ) personality ¬ ---- This Pokemon has a fierce temper and tends to complain about any little thing that may upset him. Le's have at it then." The Basculin said with a grin. He wasn't entirely sure by the demup's gaze that he was entirely okay, but he could respect a guy for not backing down regardless. The demup may not have had the best manners, but he considered such tenacity to be far more valuable anyway than a stayed tongue.
True to his word, he let the Demup make his move first, and though the attack itself wasn't all that unpredictable, the Basculin didn't manage to dodge in time and pain lashed through him as the fire type's claws raked over his scales, he flopped sideways a bit, but the Basculin quickly righted himself. That attack was a little stronger than he expected, but the fish didn't plan on going down in one hit.
"Impressive claws, bu' how abou' this!" said the Basculin, before he ducked under the water for the moment, only to come up seconds later, breaching the water and throwing himself right at the Demup with a TACKLE attack. After that he immediately flopped himself back to the water. Land made movement so awkward for a fish.

16/20 +1 Attack Blue and white fur remained bristled, even as the Basculine commended him on his decision. Cain's hackles were raised in anger, although this did little to alter hie height, and he appeared only marginally larger than before. His fur was not exactly helping to make him seem more threatening either, instead leaving the impression that he had been shocked by electricity and his hair was standing on edge because of it. When his attack landed successfully, Cain's eyes flashed in celebration, and satisfaction. His face remained drawn into a determined scowl though, and he wasn't allowing himself any more time to celebrate than that. Celebration could come later, after he had won this battle. The fish flung itself from the water and towards Cain, hitting him square on in the face. Spluttering, the Demup back-pedaled, wiping at his eyes and shaking his head in an attempt to clear it, and to remove the droplets of water that now clung to his fur. Kazza stood by wordlessly, simply watching - Cain had gotten himself into this, so it was his battle to fight, and not hers. Her job was to clean up afterwards at this point, and keep things from going too far. Still, she couldn't help but feel concerned for the Angel - by the looks of things, this Basculin was strong. Perhaps he'd inadvertently bitten off more than he could chew, and most of her team was at a disadvantage as it was - all but Saori were at least fire type in part. Frowning slightly, though, she did not interfere, instead crouching down to pet the two Growlithe who were sitting by and watching intently. Cain, recovered from the assault, cautiously approached the edge of the pier, before once again attacking in the only way he could that would do damage - by attempting to scratch the fish with his claws. From the sidelines, his teammates cheered him on. <Whoo, go Cain!><Yeah, way to go Cain! The brunette still remained silent, however, merely watching the battle unfold. ~~ Pokemon out: Qwesta - 4 turns Mirra - 4 turns Cain - 4 turns

It was a sort of awkward way to battle here. Technically all he really had to do was swim backward a bit and the demup wouldn't be able to touch him, but he was a fair fish, and there was nothing fun about a battle won on such cowardly tactics.
Despite his motions though, he still didn't move fast enough to avoid the demup's second scratch attack. "Arrch!" He growled as he flicked away for a moment before turning back to his opponent. "Heh. Ye look ador'ble when yer angry, anyone tells you tha'? Le' me help you with tha'" The Basculin chuckled gruffly. Those scratches had done a number to his scales and he was beginning to feel his injuries, but he still had gleam in his eyes and he was enjoying every minute of this battle, regardless of who was on top.
The basculin then ducked under water again, but instead of launching himself at the demup again, he leaped straight into the air and fired his WATER GUN attack from his mouth toward the demup before splashing into the water again.

8/20 +1 Attack The fact that the fish could easily just swim out of reach was evident in the Demup's gaze. He seemed reluctant to reach out over the water to strike, wary of having the Basculin swim back, possibly resulting in a loss of balance for him and an unexpected, unwanted tumble into the water. Cain did not much like the thought of that - he and water did not mix. It was only natural, after all, being a fire type. Once again, he managed to hit the water type, but, painfully aware of his precarious position, leaning over the edge of the pier, he quickly retreated back a step or two, placing a bit of distance between him and the dreaded water. It didn't matter, though, as his opponent leaped out of the sea and ended up hitting him square in the face with a spout of water. <Arrrghhhhh!>The Demup spluttered and shook, his fur now lying flat and heavy against his body. The three onlookers giggled. Furious, the Angel glared at them, and their laughter stopped momentarily, until his attention and anger refocused on the Basculin. Snarling, he lashed out at the fish aiming to scratch it once again, this time not minding so much that he had to lean out to reach - he was already soaked, after all. He was really starting to feel the strain of this battle, though. The Demup shivered from cold and exhaustion. A concerned look on her face, Kazza's shoulders tensed as she watched, trying to resist the urge to intervene - things did not look to be going well for her Pokemon. ~~ Pokemon out: (>50% HP) Qwesta - 5 turns Mirra - 5 turns (<50% HP) Cain - 1 turn

"Aye, if looks could kill, matey! Harharhar!" The Basculin chuckled, so hard that he lost focus on the battle and ended up getting scratched again without even getting a chance to dodge.
The force of the attack ended up flipping the basculin right over onto his back. Quickly though, he righted himself. "Gah, barnacles! 'supposed I deserved that much eh? Well I ain't going belly up yet!" The Basculin lamented, before ducking under the water again to prepare for another jump. Was he going to tackle? Water gun? What? The Basculin launched himself into the air again, and fired his water gun attack again at the demup.

8/20 +1 Attack If looks could kill indeed. Cain's gaze was as scathing as his type. He didn't intend on hurting the fish with looks, though. No, his claws would be far better for that particular job, and he was certainly putting them to good use now. It helped, of course, that the Basculin was laughing far too hard to dodge his attacks anyway. When the fish flipped on to his back, it was the Demup's turn to chuckle. <A pity, silence seems like it would be rather suiting for you.> he teased, but, realising what was surely coming next, he abruptly ceased his laughter and scrambled desperately to one side. The water gun attack narrowly missed him, and he could have sworn that it had come so close that droplets of water had splashed onto his already drenched fur. That had been close, too close for comfort. He needed to end this quickly, before his opponent had the chance to recover and launch a potential knock-out attack. Desperate to end the battle before the Basculin could attack again, Cain swiped out with his claws, attempting a last-ditch effort to scratch the pesky fish. The rest of the team, trainer included, watched with baited breath. This could be it, for either one of the Pokemon. ~~ Pokemon out:(>50% HP) Qwesta - 6 turns Mirra - 6 turns (<50% HP) Cain - 2 turns

The Basculin grunted after he splashed back into the water. It was down to the nit and grit, and though he couldn't accurately keep track, he wasn't quite sure he was sitting on top here. The Demup swiped at him again, and curse his horrid dodging skills, the attack landed again. 8/20 +1 Attack Cain was surprised when the Basculin laughed at his remark, to say the least. His jaw went slightly slack in shock - he was laughing at and insult... directed at him? What? The idea was alien to the Demup, and Kazza smirked at his befuddlement. It was very much amusing to her to see him shocked into silence. Still, she couldn't help but hope that the fire type could take a leaf out of the fish's book and stop being so grumpy all the time. It wouldn't hurt him to have fun every once in a while. Once the Basculin splashed back into the water, Cain was running at him, swiping towards the fish with those sharp claws. He was actually surprised when his attack hit, and, after a few tense moments, the fish collapsed on to his side. <I... Won? Ha, I knew I'd win!>Kazza could hear the shake in his voice though - he wasn't fooling her. Shaking her head at the Demup, she reached into her bag and grabbed out a pokeball. Taking a moment both to consider and to aim, she tossed the pokeball at the fish. "Cain, you really should apologise when he wakes up."The Demup huffed in annoyance at the thought, but nodded begrudgingly before being tackled to the ground by his over-excited Growlithe companions. Even though the teenager was watching her capture attempt, she still smirked at the display. ~~ Pokemon out:(>50% HP) Qwesta - 7 turns Mirra - 7 turns (<50% HP) Cain - 3 turns

As the pokeball bobbed and rocked, Kazza glanced down at Cain. He would need to visit the Pokemon Center to be healed before he did anything much else, and, not wanting him to do anything that might get them all into another battle, she returned him to his pokeball, which was now nestled safely in her pocket. By the time she had done that, the other pokeball, the one which she had thrown at the Basculin, sounded the tone that meant the capture attempt had been successful. Her eyes flashed in triumph as she strode forwards to pick up the pokeball. The Basculin would need to be healed too.
First, though, as they were now in a rare, quiet moment, she turned to Qwesta and Mirra. "OK guys, it's your turn - we're going to do a bit of training before we head back into town."
The two Growlithe nodded their assent, and, after a brief explanation, the whole group was in action.
Training, in this case, was running to warm-up - the trio charged along the almost deserted dock, racing light-heartedly as they ran laps. Qwesta and Mirra had the advantage, as they were quadrupedal, and designed for running. Still, they never got too far in front of their trainer, holding back so that they could run as a group. By the time that their trainer had motioned for them to stop, the human girl had worked up quite a sweat, and the two hound's were panting lightly.
"OK, now we'll work on your attacks. You two can spar together, but don't hurt each other, OK? This is just training, not an actual battle."
In all honesty, the warning was probably a moot point anyway - Qwesta and Mirra were young, lively, and the best of friends, as well as complete and utter sweet-hearts - they would never hurt each other on purpose.
The proposed "training match", as such, was not exactly what Kazza had meant when she suggested it, but, when the two Growlithe began to play-fight, rolling around on the ground and gently mock-biting one another, or very occasionally actually closing their jaws gently around the others fore-limbs or ears, she shrugged. They were training, she supposed, just not in a proper battle as such. Still, by the time the two Growlithe had finished their tussle, they were obviously tired.
"Nicely done guys. You did good."
Two tails wagged happily in response.

Qwesta and Mirra gain 2 friendship points each! As Kazza's Growlithe had fun training with each other, a little further up the port there was something considerably less fun going on. Beneath one of the docks where the water was low and exposing patches of sandy land, a little Mantyke was crawling as best she could while another pair of pokemon, a Krabby with an unusual golden shell, along with a fairly average looking Corphish drover her further out of the water, snapping at the young pokemon with their pincers. <Ow! Stop it, leave me alone!> The Mantyke whimpered helplessly. The Krabby just snorted contemptuously and snapped her claws shut on the Mantyke's tail. <Owwww!!! Stoooop iiiit!> The Krabby mocked derisively, as a sadistic grin spread across her face. Served the little brat right, just swimming around like she had the best life in the world! <Keep sobbing wimp, because that's all you are!> The Krabby sneered. <Keep crawling, you'll love it on the beach!> The Corphish jeered as he snapped his claws at the Mantyke as well. Once they had this runt on the beach, they would really show her something to be all happy about. <How's that feel?> The Corphish taunted as he clamped his pincers down hard on the Mantyke's wing. The Mantyke squealed in pain. <Stop it, stop being so mean.> She whimpered helplessly. She could barely move, most of her belly and face were slicked in mud. She had no idea what she had done to provoke these two, and she wasn't a really good fighter and couldn't hold her own against both of them. <Someone help!!> The Mantyke screamed out, hoping that someone would come and stop these two from tormenting her. ~*~

The trio, satisfied with their training, and just a little tired, were about to head back into town and the pokemon center when, just as they were turning to leave, faint sounds could be heard coming from further up the port. Kazza hesitated, torn - she didn't want to leave any of her team members suffering too long, and she was at a disadvantage here as her team consisted mostly of fire-types. But if someone was in trouble, she couldn't just leave them. Mind made up, the brunette and her two canines jogged over towards the source of the commotion. They still had no clue as to where the sounds were coming from when a cry for help was shouted out, surprisingly loud. <Under the dock!>Qwesta exclaimed, and the group ran to the edge, jumping off on to the exposed sand. The ground squelched wetly as they cautiously approached, turning a corner to reveal the source. A Mantyke, beached on one of the raised sandy areas, was slick with mud. A shiny Krabby and a Corphish seemed to be harassing her. Fur bristling, Qwesta growled, furious at what she was witnessing. Kazza's gaze was steely and her words were cold as ice when she spoke. "You two, leave her alone."As she stepped towards the struggling Mantyke, her friends' hackles were raised, and they advanced on the two crustaceans, unfazed by their disadvantage. "It's OK, we're here to help."With some luck, which she always seemed to be lacking, the two water-types might be all talk and no action, or perhaps even cowardly and unwilling to have a fair fight. She doubted it, though. Either way, Qwesta and Mirra were ready for a fight. nickname -- ( QWESTA ) species -- ( SHINY GROWLITHE♀ ) friendship -- ( 2/100 ) personality ¬ Brave, Loyal, Protective

The two crabby Pokemon looked over at the intruders with sneers. <Well, lookie here, some pups want to join the fun,> the Krabby said in a derisive tone. The Mantyke glanced over at the two growlithe and the trainer with tears in her eyes.
<Haha! Seriously, you mutts should mind your own business,> the Corphish jeered. However, the Corphish did not seem as confident as the Krabby. It could have been his lower level or his somewhat subordinate position, but he had just the slightest bit of hesitation in his voice. If the two Growlithe tried to intimidate the water Pokemon in some way, the Corphish at least would have a good chance of giving up the fight before it began.
The Krabby was oblivious to his companion's nervousness. He clacked his pincers at the two fire-types and pinched the Mantyke's wing again for good measure. <Owww,> the young Pokemon cried, not bothering to plead this time. She still didn't know why the two Pokemon were being so cruel, but she realized that they wouldn't stop unless someone made them.

Their interference was met with a leering threat, and Kazza's lip curled. The two growlithe's fur bristled fully, making them look larger than they truly were. Sharp fangs were on full display. They stalked closer, close enough that the trainer could see the tears brimming in the Mantyke's eyes. "Back off. Don't make us hurt you." Her jaw clenched in anger, and she spat the words at the bullies, her nose crinkling.
The Corphish joined in with more tough words to match its partner, but it seemed less sure of itself. Now that she was closer, Kazza could see that it looked smaller, scrawnier, too. It was obviously not as strong as the Krabby. The girl fixed him with a steely gaze. It looked like the weak link. They could try to scare it off... But she'd given them warning, and they had not heeded it. Seeing the crying Mantyke, struggling on the mud, she was not feeling particularly forgiving.
The two crustaceans continued in their tormenting, and Kazza felt her hands curl into fists. "That's how you want to do this? Fine." She glanced to her two Pokemon, said in a surprisingly calm voice given the rage she currently felt, "Start with the Corphish." Hopefully they could deal with him quickly and, in the process, draw the Krabby away from the Mantyke so she could help.
Just like that, it was as though the two Growlithe had been let off an invisible leash. Both canines lunged at the Corphish, mouths wide, aiming to Bite the critter. There was no mercy in their glares as they rushed towards the water-type. They may be at a type disadvantage, but they had made the first move. Hopefully it would be enough - Kazza wasn't sure how much help Cain could be in his current state, and Finn was still knocked out in his pokeball from the fight.
